This is a total piece of fiction, it has never, and hopefully never will happen. It contains a upsetting subject and some people may not wish to read any further.
Darren sat by the bed.
He’d kept this up for a few days now.
Neither of them said very much, if they did say anything it was about what the doctor had just told them.
They both knew she was ill, very ill, and when she’d been admitted to hospital a week before, Darren had cancelled the rest of his world tour just to be at her bedside.
Amber had a rare form of cancer. The doctors had tried everything but her condition kept getting worse. In the past year she had been in hospital more than 7 times, each time staying for 2 or 3 weeks.
Darren was a world famous pop star but he’d drop everything, and frequently did, to be with Amber in Hospital.
They’d been married for a couple of years and both wanted children, unfortunately they both knew their dreams would never come true.
Amber was back in hospital, this time though it was worse. She could hardly move and was in a lot of pain.
"Darren just go, get some sleep in your own bed. You’re tired. You really didn’t have to fly over here and drop the tour. I’ll be fine," she said, quietly.
"No, I’m not leaving you" he told her, "You can’t make me leave"
"Darren, just go. Otherwise I’ll get security in here to take you home, now go!" she said, in a voice as loud as she could possibly manage.
"But I don’t want to leave you" he said, taking hold of her hand.
"Please Darren. Go, get some sleep. I’ll be fine here"
Darren nodded, getting up.
He kissed her cheek, "I love you. Don’t leave me" he whispered
"I love you. I’ll never leave you Darren, never" she smiled
He nodded again, walking sadly towards the door.
He looked back at her, eyes closed, calm, peaceful, asleep.
Darren went home, had a shower and fell asleep in his own bed.
At about 2am the phone rang.
"Uh!" Darren yawned, rolling over to pick up the phone. "Hayes, how can I help you" he answered
"Mr. Hayes, can you come down to the hospital, its urgent" said a worried sounding doctor on the other end.
"What’s happened?" Darren yelled down the phone, suddenly awake
"I think its best if you just come down to the hospital. See you soon"
"Yeah, see you soon" he said, putting the phone back in its cradle.
Darren leaped out of bed, and began rummaging round, finding clothes.
He quickly got dressed and ran down to his car, before driving to the hospital.
He ran up the stairs to Amber’s room, two at a time.
He stopped when he got to the door. There were masses of doctors and nurses inside, all busy.
He put his hand on the glass, looking sadly through the window.
"Mr. Hayes?" someone asked, behind him.
"Yes"
"Do you want to come with me?" said the doctor.
Darren followed him down the hallway to a small room, containing a couple of sofa’s, a small table and a coffee machine.
"Please, sit down" the doctor told him.
Darren sat down before the doctor continued
"I’m Doctor Terry White, I’ve been helping to look after your wife"
Darren cut him off, "Why am I here at 2:30 am?" he yelled
"An hour ago you wife’s condition began to deteriorate rapidly. I’m sorry to tell you this Mr. Hayes but your wife died 10 minutes ago"
Darren sat, staring at the doctor. Had he just said what he thought he’d said? "Pardon?" Darren asked, "I don’t understand"
"Your wife, Amber, died 10 minutes ago. We did all we could sir."
"Was she in pain?" Darren asked, tears beginning to fall silently down his cheeks.
The doctor nodded. "I’m sorry"
Darren nodded, "it’s ok" he sniffled
"Do you want to see her?" he asked
Darren nodded again, "Please"
The doctor got up and led Darren back towards Amber’s room.
Tears were falling freely down Darren’s cheeks as he walked into her room.
"I’ll leave you alone" Terry said before closing the door.
She looked as peaceful as she had done when Darren had left her just a few hours earlier. Her eyes were closed, the machines were blank, switched off.
He sat down next to her by the bed.
"Why Amber?" he sobbed, "You said you’d never leave me"
"I’m still with you Darren, I’m always with you" said a voice. It sounded like Amber, and Darren was sure it was.
Darren sat crying in that room for an hour before some men came to take her body.
Darren walked back out to his car. It was still dark. He climbed in and drove away, tears still falling, blurring his vision.
When he got to the bridge he stopped the car and got out.
He walked to the edge.
"Why did you leave me" he screamed, "You said you’d never leave me."
As he stood on the bridge he prayed. He prayed for his family, his friends, his fans, all of whom would be deeply saddened by what he was about to do.
He turned around looking over the bay and the sun rose.
Then very quietly, he took a step forwards, over the edge.
